Wet Your Whistle

Written by von Stiehl

Yes, it's that time again. Our Wisconsin Winery is hosting the 2010 Wet Whistle Wine Fest on September 18th and 19th.

You never know who you'll see.

Doors open at 10am (it's after noon somewhere, right?) and stay open until 6pm. That means 8 hours each day are devoted to Wisconsin wine tastings, wine and cheese pairings, and wine and chocolate. No Wet Whistle is complete without Grape Stomps, a time for wine enthusiasts to experience grapes in a new way - with their feet.

You never know what you'll see.

Spend time at the Fine Art Show, the Heritage Food Tents, and listening to live music. Celebrate the Wisconsin Wine you have come to know and love. For more details, please visit our Events page.

Romantic Getaway in Door County

Written by von Stiehl

Summer may be drawing to a close, but there is still time to grab your sweetie and head to Door County for a romantic getaway. On the way to an adorable vacation cottage or bed and breakfast, stop by our Algoma Wisconsin winery. Take a tour of our historic facilities, if you have time, and spend some time wine tasting. Don't leave without a bottle or two of your favorite Von Stiehl Wisconsin wines - they will make your weekend extra special.

Stay cool with a bottle of one of our fruit wines. Nothing says summer like our Blueberry wine, full of the fresh taste of Michigan berries. It is semi-sweet and has a hint of tartness - just right for enjoying after dinner, while watching the sun set.

Cool Off at Algoma's Crescent Beach

Written by von Stiehl

In the heat of the summer, two things are essential. The first is access to a body of water, such as Lake Michigan, in which you can swim. The second is access to good wine, such as our Wisconsin Wine. Fortunately, both can be found in Algoma.

Crescent Beach is not far from the marina, in downtown Algoma. It's the kind of beach that invites lounging, shell collecting, and sand-castle building. All in all, it's a pleasant place to pass an afternoon - especially a warm afternoon. The cool waters of Lake Michigan will be irresistible.

The oldest winery in Wisconsin is not far from Crescent Beach. After a few hours in the sun, you'll be ready for the shade of our tasting room, where we will uncork just about any bottle you'd like to try (within reason, of course). After all, it behooves us to open our cellars to the public - you can't love us unless you know us.

Summer may be winding down (the start of school - death toll of summer vacation - is close at hand), but that's merely a reminder to make the most of it while you can. Algoma is only 45 minutes east of Green Bay. Stop here on your way to Door County, or make our Algoma Wisconsin winery your destination. Then you can toast the arrival of autumn in style.

Summer = Riesling

Written by von Stiehl

Summer is wonderful. It means long, hot, days, and long, warm nights. It means beach parties, lake swimming, camping and boating. It's when we stay up late, get up early, and try to fit in as much as possible.

Summer just wouldn't be summer without our Wisconsin Riesling. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like Riesling - even people who say they don't like wine (hard to believe, but they're out there) usually find they enjoy a glass of Riesling once they try it. It is the perfect Wisconsin wine for summer afternoons and evenings.

Shanty Days!

Written by von Stiehl

Each year, Algoma hosts a grand celebration of our Lake Michigan heritage with Shanty Days Celebration of the Lake. The 23rd Annual Shanty Days Celebration takes place August 13 - 15 on the festival grounds overlooking the Algoma Harbor - steps away from our Algoma Wisconsin Winery.

The fun actually starts on Thursday the 12th, the first day of the four-day long Shanty Days Fishing Tournament. All anglers are welcome. Bibliophiles will want to come early on Friday (8am) for the Friends of the Library annual book sale. But the actual celebration kicks off at the fairgrounds Friday afternoon, where there will be lots of great food, our Wisconsin Wine, live music, and a host of fun activities for people of all ages.

Wisconsin Wine Goes Well with Czech Food

Written by von Stiehl

The annual Northeastern Wisconsin Czech/Kolache Fest comes to the peninsula August 7 and 8, 2010. It is the largest Czech Festival in Northeastern Wisconsin, and features accordion music, vendors, and kolaches fresh from the oven until the crowds eat them all.

The event takes place at the Heritage Farm, a well-preserved Czech Farmstead just south of Kewaunee. Tap your feet to the Jolly Czechs Band while nibbling tasty Czech Chicken Booyah. Life doesn't get much better than this.

On your way to and/or from Kewaunee, stop by our Algoma Wisconsin winery for a tour and wine tasting. We will happily recommend wine to accompany your chicken booyah and favorite Czech desserts.

Our Algoma winery is located just 45 minutes northeast of Green Bay, by Lake Michigan. Drive to Algoma, head south along the coast to Kewaunee, then circle back to Green Bay - it's the perfect weekend scenic drive, and it can involve good Wisconsin wine and Czech food to boot.

Art in Algoma

Written by von Stiehl

The Eclipse Gallery in Algoma celebrates its first anniversary on August 1, 2010, and we are so happy they are here. The Eclipse Gallery is a wonderful addition to the community of downtown Algoma. It specializes in contemporary art and handmade design, fine crafts and goods, supporting living artists and helping them find an audience for their work.

Now through September 26, 2919, The Eclipse Gallery is running a solo show of Andrew Linsken's recent work. The show is entitled Andrew Linsken: Abstract Intuitive Tessellation Illustrations and other 3D Explorations. Andrew Linsken hails from Green Bay, and we are hoping that folks from his home town will make the drive to Algoma to support him.

While in town for the exhibition, stop by our Algoma Wisconsin winery. Art and wine go together like paint and canvas. Well, maybe that's not quite right. but you get the picture. Before heading to the gallery, enjoy a little wine at our winery Wisconsin. After viewing the show, enjoy a taste of wine at Von Stiehl. Pick up a bottle or two to bring back home, where you can continue your discussion of the show.

The Salmon of Lake Michigan

Written by von Stiehl

The 28th Annual Kewaunee/Door Salmon Tournament is just around the corner, July 24 to August 1, 2010. Already, anglers are checking their gear and preparing themselves for the Midwest's most popular Chinook salmon fishing contest. The king fish will bring its angler $10,000. Now that's some fish!

The fish must be caught in Lake Michigan waters off Kewaunee or Door Counties. Weigh-in ports are at Algoma, Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay, Baileys Harbor and Washington Island.

That's wonderful, you say, but what does all this have to do with Wisconsin wine? Everyone knows that wine is not what serious anglers drink when seriously angling.

Ah, but what about those the fishermen left behind?

Every angler leaves someone behind. There are many spouses and friends of anglers who are simply not interested in spending the day in pursuit of the biggest and best fish in the lake. For these souls, may we recommend waiting for your angler in the tasting room of our Algoma Wisconsin winery.

Remember, Algoma is a weigh-in station for the 28th Annual Kewaunee/Dorr Salmon Tournament. While your man (or woman) fishes, visit Algoma. Stop by our Algoma Wisconsin winery, tour our historic building, and taste until you find the perfect bottle to toast the biggest fish, or offer consolation for the one that got away. We have wines for every event, every occasion, every possibility.

Ladies Rave About Wisconsin Winery Festival

Written by von Stiehl

We are thrilled each summer when ladies step out for Ladies' Fest at our Algoma Wisconsin Winery. Since Ladies' Fest 2010 is just a few days away on Saturday, July 10, we thought we'd pass on a few comments about past Ladies' Festivals.

Our Algoma Wisconsin Winery annual Ladies Fest is just around the corner, on July 10, 2010. We've been fielding a lot of questions about the event, so we thought we'd provide a few FAQs. Read on to learn about food choices, dance lessions, massages and more!

Do I need to purchase a ticket prior to the event?
We do not offer pre-sales of tickets unless it's a discounted package price for 10 or more ladies. Simply purchase your ticket at the gate on July 10th. The line is the longest between 11:30 am. and 1 pm., but it's a festival atmosphere so nobody seems to mind.

What is the food that is included?
You will have a choice: (while supplies last)

Poppyseed Chicken Pasta Salad
Julienne Chicken Breast Strips, Red & Yellow Peppers, Fresh Grapes, and pasta mixed through with poppyseed dressing
OR
Chicken Caesar Wrap
Grilled Chicken, Romaine Lettuce, Parmesan Cheese & Caesar dressing wrapped in a tortilla. The dishes will be catered in by The Marq (the former Apple Creek Inn out of De Pere)

Other food to be purchased on the grounds includes items like cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, turtle brownies, and strawberry shortcake.

What is the shopping all about?
The shopping "Faire" will include over twenty vendors and will be set up just outside of the festival grounds. A large variety of purses, jewelry, kitchen wares, and other fun items will be available. There will also be experts on hand to advise you in skin care, financial decisions, and travel.

What kind of dance lessons are going on and at what times?
Throughout the day, there are belly dancing demos and lessons.

How do the massages work?
The massages are from 11am to 5 pm, and are given by a team of 20 professional massage therapists in a separate tent. They are there to pamper you and help you to enjoy the benefits of massage. Every lady that receives a massage will also be given a free bottle of water afterward. A third glass of wine, soda, or water will be offered to ladies who are unable to receive a massage due to lack of availability, any personal health condition, or your personal preference. The therapists reserve the right to refuse a massage to anyone at any time.

If I purchase wine, is there some way to get it to my car?
Yes, we will have "pool boys" to serve and help out. We will also be running a jeep as a shuttle. This is a clean event, so don't worry about the pool boys. They are harmless.

What bands are playing and when?
Kerry Michaels acoustic rock from 11 am. to 3 pm., and the Mango Brothers Band from 3 pm. to 7 pm.

Do I have to be a member of the Ladies of the Vine to attend?

You do not need to be a member, but you will become one just by attending this event.
You get special treatment as soon as you become a member, including 10% off of all gift merchandise and free tours for you and your party (May through October). We also will keep you informed via email about upcoming Ladies' events and specials.

Is the winery open that day and will there be tours?
Yes, we will be open from 9 am. to 7 pm. Tours normally cost $3.75 per person and run from 9:30 am. to 5 pm. Once you become a LOTV member, your tours are free.

Will there be any non-alcoholic beverages?
Yes, non alcoholic sparking grape juice, soda, and water.
