Von Stiehl by Boat

Written by von Stiehl

Von Stiehl Winery is about as close as you can get to Lake Michigan without being in Lake Michigan. Actually, the winery sits on the banks of the Ahnapee River, which spills into nearby Lakes Michigan. The walk from the Algoma Marina to our Wisconsin Winery is short and sweet. This makes von Stiehl a great place to visit when you're out boating on Lake Michigan.

As you're making your plans for summer outings, whether they be on sailboats or motor boats, put Algoma on the map. Pull your boat into the Algoma Marina and walk up to von Stiehl Winery. Take a tour of the winery or sidle up to the bar for some complimentary wine tasting. On warm afternoons, enjoy drinks and tasty treats on the terrace.

Summer will be here sooner than you think, and warm weekends will be here even sooner. When you feel the urge to get out on Lake Michigan, remember our Algoma Winery. Stop by and pick up some cool Wisconsin white wine to enjoy on the lake, like our Lakehore Fume or our Lakeshore Mist.

Mother's Day Weekend at von Stiehl

Written by von Stiehl

Mother's Day Weekend is fast approaching. Why not bring Mom to von Stiehl for a little wine tasting on May 12 or 13, 2012?

You could just offer Mom a bottle of our Wisconsin Wine--say, Naughty Girl Red or Cherry Blossom Blush. But wouldn't it be much more fun to surprise her with an outing to a charming town on the shores of Lake Michigan? Take a tour of our historic winery, spend some time sampling our wines, and buy mom a bottle (or two) of her favorite wine.

Many mothers of adult children just want to spend time with their kids on Mother's Day. Many mothers of small children just want a couple of hours away from the kids. Wine tasting at von Stiehl Wisconsin Winery is the perfect activity, either way.

We're offering a Mother's Day Weekend special. Purchase 6 or more bottles of wine and, in addition to the usual quantity discount, we'll throw in a beautiful floral umbrella and a packet of seeds. If you think your mother (or the mother of your children) would like that, bring her to our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery. We have limited quantities!

Door County Antiquing

Written by von Stiehl

May is a great time for antiquing in Door County. The weather is usually wonderful (if a bit unpredictable). Fruit trees are in full bloom and flowers are popping up everywhere. In short, spring is a lovely time to travel to Wisconsin's Door County.

There are many fine antique stores up and down the Door Peninsula, such as:

  • Baileys Barn Antiques, in Baileys Harbor.
  • Boat House Antiques in Sturgeon Bay.
  • A Summer Cottage in Fish Creek.
  • Chanticleer Antiques in Sister Bay.
  • Cornerstone Antiques in Egg Harbor.

Of course, part of the fun is discovering your own treasures as you explore country lanes throughout Door County.

Don't forget to stop by Algoma for a little Wisconsin Wine tasting at von Stiehl before your antiquing adventure. You'll want a nice bottle of wine with you if you spend the night on the peninsula.

Save time to take a winery tour of von Stiehl during your Door County antiquing weekend!

National Drink Wine Day

Written by von Stiehl

There just weren't enough holidays until National Drink Wine Day joined the calendar. Admittedly, this is still a relatively unknown holiday, and few (if any) folks will be given the day off from work. Nonetheless, we're doing our part to spread the word here at von Stiehl,

Let's be clear about something: the way to celebrate National Drink Wine Day is NOT to drink wine all day. Wine is to be sipped and savored. Less is more, when it comes to drinking wine. Did we really say that?

That said, we invite one and all to celebrate National Drink Wine Day with wine tasting at our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery. Sample up to seven wines, and when you find one you can't live without, buy a bottle and take it home. We pour 30 Wisconsin in the tasting room, and we're open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Consider trying our Winter Sampler, which includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Barrel Select Cabernet, Merlot, Meritage, Satin Red, and Naughty Girl. If you like the taste pours, you can take home the real Winter Sampler Kit. It should help the remainder of winter pass more enjoyably.

Even if you can't make it to our Wisconsin Winery, we hope you'll celebrate National Drink Wine Day at home. Share a really special bottle of wine with a really special person or two. Now that's an event worth celebrating.

Romance with Wisconsin Wine

Written by von Stiehl

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Are you prepared?

Like Mother's Day and Father's Day, Valentine's Day is an opportunity to show someone special how much we appreciate him / her. Sometimes we get busy and forget just how meaningful a little recognition can be.

Show your sweetie how much she/he means to you. Offer a bottle of our Wisconsin Wine.

We all have our favorites. Some of us prefer the semi-dry Riesling. Others prefer a velvety Cabernet Sauvignon, and still others like nothing more than Doc Stiehl's Cherry Bounce, a delicious blend of cherry wine and cherry brandy. Remember to offer the wine your sweetie likes best, even if you prefer another varietal, and even if your plans involve sharing it. That's love.

The Tasting Room at our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Why not take the afternoon off work and bring your true love here. An afternoon of wine tasting is mighty romantic!

Consider offering a gift basket for Valentine's Day.

Happy New Year Wisconsin Wine Lovers

Written by von Stiehl

2011 has been an exciting year for our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery.

During the summer, we all enjoyed our new terrace, and the Cuisine Concert Series that took place there on Saturday afternoons.

After years of planning, our new production facility is now fully operational. We love "Over There." It's spacious and the vats gleam.

A variety of special events kept us busy and entertained in 2011: the annual Wet Whistle Wine Fest, the annual Ladies' Fest, and a host of smaller but no less fun luncheons and tastings.

The art of transforming grapes and fruit into this magical liquid is ancient and inspired. It is an honor for us to carry on the tradition here at von Stiehl. For us, one of the best aspects of wine is that people like to enjoy it in the company of others. It brings people together.

As 2011 draws to a close, we feel thankful for all that has transpired in the last 12 months. We're thankful for the amazing community here--folks who work with us and folks who visit. We look forward to another good year in 2012, and hope you'll stop by our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery when you have the chance.

Happy New Year!

Fun on the terrace this summer.

2011 Fall Crush at von Stiehl

Written by von Stiehl

It's been busy at our Algoma Wisconsin Winery.

Recently, Marechal Foch grapes were destemmed, crushed, and then pressed into some 67 TONS of juice. It was an impressive endeavor, and a successful one. We're already anticipating the wine to come, though we know we have to wait until Aric, and time, can work their magic.

This week we're crushing Marquette grapes, and after that we'll tackle more Marechal Foch, Frontenac, Merlot, and Cabernet. Fall revolves around the harvest and the crush, as it has for thousands of years. It feels good to be part of such a longstanding tradition.

If you're interested in witnessing the crush, you're welcome to do so. Just head to our Algoma Wisconsin Winery for a winery tour. Bring your camera!

Take a Sip of Nature

Written by von Stiehl

Before the wine comes the grapes. Before the grapes comes the sun and the rain. To drink wine is to take a sip of nature's bounty.

We hope you'll toast the conclusion of summer this Labor Day with a glass of our Wisconsin Wine.

Ah, Wine and Chocolate

Written by von Stiehl

Weather seems to be getting people down all over the country. Extreme heat on the east coast, dust storms in the southwest, cool temperatures and rain on the west coast,…. Summer expectations are being shattered in every region, day after day, week after week.

There is nothing we can do about the weather, of course. Our choices are to accept our fate or not, to bear heat and cold, rain and drought with grace, or with rage. We here at von Stiehl Wisconsin Winery encourage everyone to remember that weather isn't everything in life. There is wine. There is chocolate.

We have some incredible pairings of wine and chocolate in our Algoma, Wisconsin, Winery Tasting Room these days. It was a tough job determining which wines worked best with which chocolates, but we struggled through. We invite you to sip our Wisconsin wine and bite into artisan chocolate; the experience will make your day brighter.

Kattywompus Konfections supplies us with amazing chocolates, such as dark chocolate bark studded with dried cherries and sprinkled with smoked sea salt, and white chocolate bark with macadamia nuts, mango, and coconut. Their combinations are rich and flavorful, and the chocolates positively melt on the tongue. When paired with a glass of our Cabernet Sauvignon or our Meritage, the chocolates take on a new dimension. Combinations can be positively heavenly.

Come see for yourself. Then throw a summer party featuring combinations of von Stiehl wine and Kattywompus chocolate. And smile.

A Father's Day Gift of Wisconsin Wine

Written by von Stiehl

Every family has their own way of celebrating Father's Day. Father's of young children are often treated to breakfast in bed and homemade cards. Father's of teens might get a nod and a "Happy Father's Day. Can I borrow the car?" Father's of adult children may get a call and a gift in the mail.

Some dads want nothing more than to spend Father's Day with their children, no matter their age. This can mean of day of fishing on Lake Michigan, golfing, or watching a game on t.v. It may mean spending the day in the kitchen with the kids, preparing a great feast, or heading to the closest city for a day of exploration and eating out. You never can tell with Dads.

No matter how you celebrate Father's Day in your family, consider giving dad a bottle (or two) of von Stiehl Wisconsin Wine.

If you live near Algoma or have plans to visit Door County over the weekend, stop by the winery for a bit of wine tasting. The tasting bar is bustling these days, which means the mood is festive. If you find a bottle you like and have a little time to spare, ask us for some "to go" wine glasses, purchase some local cheese and crackers in our store, and enjoy an impromptu picnic on our new terrace. Just be sure you remember to bring a bottle of our Algoma Wisconsin Wine with you when you leave.

We here at von Stiehl wish dads everywhere a Happy Father's Day in 2011.
