August 10-12, 2012: Shanty Days in Algoma, WI

July 27th, 2012 by

Shanty Days is one of Algoma, Wisconsin’s favorite annual celebrations, featuring a host of fun actitivies and events. Most of the action is on the Main Grounds at Clark and 2nd. (If you’re a regular at the annual Wet Whistle Wine Festival, then you’re familiar with the spot.)

The Arts & Crafts fair is “on the Green,” a broad area of lawn that will have white vendor tents on it. Wander the booths and check out the fun and original art created by local artists and craftmen.

The Kids Area at the north end of the Main Grounds has a playground and entertainment perfect for children. Shanty Days also has a Fishing Tournament, food booths, and a full schedule of live music all weekend. But the heart of Shanty Days is its tribute to the spirit of volunteerism in Algoma. Volunteers contribute so much to the happiness and quality of life in our home town. It’s fitting to have a big party to honor our volunteers and to highlight important individuals who give back. This year, the 2012 Shanty Days Committee has selected Judy Srnka as the Shanty Days Honoree for her tireless volunteer work.

2012 Shanty Days 5K Race

Starting at 8:30 am, the Saturday 5K Run/Walk is the weekend’s main event. The Shanty Days race route takes a scenic loop through town, starting and ending at the shore of Lake Michigan. There are water stations along the way and food, water and a sports drink will be offered at the end of the race. Kids can get in on the action too. There’s a Half-Mile Kid’s Race for children age 10 and up right after the 5K is done. To register and learn more about the 2012 Shanty Days 5K Run, please visit Active.com.

After all that physical activity, relax at von Stiehl winery. Conveniently, the finish line is only a few blocks from our door. Runners/walkers will pass by our Algoma winery, so it’s easy to back track and stop by for a visit!

At noon, after the races are over, there’s the Shanty Days Parade. It’s always fun to line up along the route and watch the bands, tractors and floats go by. If you want to be in the parade, you can pre-register online or call Pam at (920) 487-2041. Go to Algoma.org and click on the “Shanty Days” tab for a detailed schedule of events and music, plus links to register online for the 5K Run and the parade.

Our friends and family will be joining the festivities and the winery will be open all weekend to help celebrate the fun of Shanty Days! Hope to see you there or at the winery!
