Vintage Wines with a River View

May 28, 2018 by Rayanne Racine

Summer Concert SeriesIf you’ve been to one of our summer concerts you know they are a big hit! We are excited that our 2018 Concert Series will be starting up in a month!

Below you will find a few updates we made for this year’s Summer Concert Series.

We’ve learned our customers love events that are all about the wine! This year, we will be offering a special Super Select Tasting in our cellar tunnels. Each Saturday, we will feature a wine from our Vintage Tasting list to offer in addition to our Select Tasting List. We’ve held back these wines for special events such as this. Most of the wines featured have less than 15 cases left, so tears will be shed. The special tastings will take place during the concerts. A $15 admission will cover the cost of the tastings and the Riedel crystal glass you’ll be able to take home with you. The featured wines, along with the bands, are listed below to help plan your trip!

  • July 7th – Annie Rose – 2010 Yakima Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
  • July 14th – Beaker Street – 2013 Extended Barrel Aged Kirsche
  • July 21st – Shocker – 2014 Alexander Valley Merlot
  • July 28th – Del Rays – 2012 Sierra Foothills Cabernet Sauvignon
  • August 4th – Doc Rube – 2012 Sangiovese Grosso
  • August 11th – Classic Friends – 2013 Sierra Foothills Cabernet Sauvignon
  • August 18th – Giving up the Ghost – Tequila Barrel Aged Hard Cider
  • August 25th – Glass Hammer – 2018 BrewVino Red
  • September 1st – Annie Rose – 2009 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

The above vintage wines will only be available for purchase by the bottle.

Summer Series Vintage Wines

In past years, we’ve had a tent out on our lawn serving our wine and Ahnapee’s beer. This year, we’ve decided to open the doors to our tunnels and serve the wine in our barrel aging tunnels and inside the winery allowing for cash and card sales. Beer will be available at the Taproom, but still can be enjoyed on the terrace. The Skaliwagon Food Truck will not be with us this year. Instead, we recommend trying our Wine Picnic Box Special. This special will include local cheeses, sausage from Salmon’s Meat made with our Hard Cider, Halo Vino glasses, and other yummy snacks fit for two.

If you have any questions please contact our Special Event Coordinator, Rayanne Racine, at rayanne@vonstiehl.com.

Door County Wine Fest

May 28, 2018 by Rayanne Racine

Door County Wine Fest

When coming to Door County, do you often think “So much wine and oh so little time”?

We are honored to be a part of the Door County Wine Trail‘s third annual Door County Wine Fest. The Door County Wine Fest features all your favorite wineries in one convenient location.

Who are the participating wineries? The list is the same as that of the Door County Wine Trail: Door 44, Door Peninsula, Harbor Ridge, Orchard Country, Red Oak, Simon Creek, Stone’s Throw, and von Stiehl Winery. Each will bring 8 wines for sampling.

Wondering what tricks we have up our sleeve (A.K.A what wines we will be bringing)? We’ve got a great line up for this year’s event. We don’t want to spoil the fun when you get to our tasting table, so we won’t spill all our secrets. To give you a nice little tease, we will share three wines you can look forward to seeing this year.

  1. For starters, our 50th year anniversary wine, 2013 Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon, will be available to sample. To those who have had this wine, you know how generous we are being sampling this fine wine. Those that haven’t yet had the chance, be sure to stop by and give it a try. It was hand-crafted and nurtured in the finest Italian-coopered French Gamba Barrels. Its well-balanced acid and tannin give way to opulent flavors of dark fruit and vanilla.
  2. On the sweeter side, enjoy the sweet and smooth concoction of cherry wine and cherry brandy that is prevalent in our Cherry Bounce. It features intense aromas of fresh cherry pie, but be careful, it’s right around 20.5% alcohol.
  3. Lastly, our ever so popular Crimson Royale will be at this year’s festival, as it is celebrating its 30 year anniversary! This wine is always a crowd pleaser as it’s a sweet Concord wine great for sipping on warm days or enjoying with your favorite creamy Cheddar or Havarti.

What began as a small 500-800 person tasting event has grown into a full-blown ‘rent the entire park’ kind of party. Sturgeon Bay will be a wine taster’s paradise June 30th. To learn more about the event and to get tickets, visit the Door County Wine Fest website by clicking here.

P.S. Don’t forget to take advantage of our one time only offer given to those that come to the event!

BrewVino Steer Roast 5 Reasons

BrewVino Roast – a True Farm-to-Table Experience!

By now you have heard about our BrewVino Roast through our Facebook page, an episode featured on the Cooking Channel, or even word of mouth from an attendee that told you they got their tickets and you shouldn’t wait much longer. BrewVino is only a month away and with less than half of the tickets left for this year’s event, time is no longer on your side!

Maybe you’ve seen all the posts and the episodes on television, yet you need one more reason you should come to this year’s BrewVino Roast. Well, that’s exactly why we are going to give you “5 Reasons You Should Attend our 2018 BrewVino!” If you’ve already bought your tickets, then think of this list as the “5 Reasons You Should Be Excited to Attend our 2018 BrewVino!”

  1. Wine! After all, what’s an event at a winery without wine? Not only do we have our typical wine selection, but we’ll also have a vintage wine tasting offered in our century year old tunnels. Some of the wines you’ll find waiting for you include our 2014 Alexander Valley Merlot, 2009 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 BrewVino Red (which we will talk about more in just a little bit) and our 2013 Extended Barrel Aged Kirsche. These wines and others on this list aren’t available for purchase just any normal day. After BrewVino, the wine left over will be hidden away until our winemakers decide when to bring them back out.
  2. Jumping off of our first point, our 2018 BrewVino Roast Red has taken a step up from past years. You can tell by the smile on our winemakers’ faces that they are proud of this year’s vintage. If you are a fan of our Calistoga Cabernet, this wine is right up your alley! It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot. To match the exquisite wine inside the bottle, the label is a decadent maple veneer label with a black foil stamp.
  3. Everyone loves a little feel good aspect. This year we’ve decided to come together with the Wolf Den organization at the Algoma High School. Wolf Den is an after school program aimed at improving the physical, social and emotional well-being of Algoma’s youth. Wolves (high school students) plan and lead various activities which build Pups’ (elementary students) resilience, positive mindset, and basic life skills. There is an optional meal at the end of the program each day to ensure their basic needs are met before going home. Food insecurity and poverty effect many of our Algoma youth.  This program, along with the Wolves & Pups Mentorship Program, ensures that the Pups feel safe, valued and supported.
  4. A true Farm-to-Table experience, that’s exactly what you’ll get! This steer was raised on Ahnapee Brewery spent grains on the Bryersquart Family Farm in Forestville. This is not an amateur production either — for starters, the steer is processed by Otto’s Meats in Luxemburg. After, von Stiehl’s winemaker, Aric Schmiling, will prepare the special cherry wine marinade. Then, the full carcass is marinated for 24 hours before it’s laid over a hot fire at 2 am on the day of the event, with a serving time somewhere between noon and 2 pm, or when our experts deem it ready.
  5. Tickets are selling fast and you’ll regret not getting your tickets fast enough after listening to your friends talking about how much fun they had! Now that the event is drawing closer, the phone calls are coming in, ticket sales are booming and attendees keep calling back to get more tickets for their groups. This year we are capping our attendance to 750 lucky individuals. If you are thinking about how fun this event is, there hasn’t been a better time to get your tickets than now, in order to secure your spot at this event.

Vintage Tasting At Wet Whistle Wine Fest

August 18, 2017 by Rayanne Racine

von Stiehl Offers Vintage Tasting on September 16

Tucked away in various places of our production and tasting room buildings are small lots of old vintages. There will be two to ten cases of our favorite varieties spread out and tucked under pallet racking that look out of place. Early September, the odd lots are gathered, we come to terms with how many bottles of each to sell, and we then come up with a Vintage Tasting List. This list is offered only once a year at the Wet Whistle Wine Fest.

Some of the wines offered at this event have a limited supply, so tears will be shed. Below is a sneak peek at a few of the wines featured at this year’s Vintage Tasting.

2015 Big Roast Red ~ This special bottling for our 2015 Meet the Makers Festival, now known as BrewVino Roast, is a blend of four different wines to create the perfect blend. A little spicy with a hint of oak, this blend creates the perfect wine for a barbecue. Only 16 bottles left!

2012 VS Barrel Select Cabernet ~ Every few years an outstanding vintage is allowed an extended time in oak. Three top-tier barrels from a lot of twelve were blended to create this one-time offering. This medium bodied, rich and elegant wine features fragrant aromas of black cherry, cassis and plum with flavors of currant and dark berries. It will only be available at special tastings, so this may be your only time to try it! 20 cases – New Release!

2016 Apple Bounce ~ Intense aromas of fresh apple pie marry with smooth apple brandy overtones. It’s been aged in small American oak bourbon barrels for four months. 20.5% alcohol. Be careful! Unlimited ~ New Release!

We’d love for you to join us on September 16, from 12:30pm to 3:30pm in the bottling room of our production building at 104 Steele Street. You don’t have to attend the wine festival in order to take part in this tasting, but you are more than welcome to!
