August 22, 2012 by

wet_whistleYou’ve waited long enough…at long last, it’s that special time of year when Algoma’s downtown fills with people imbibing great local wines, stomping on grapes and wearing funny costumes while dancing to live music. Yes, it’s the 11th annual Wet Whistle Wine Festival!

As always, the center of the action is our Algoma winery at 115 Navarino Street and the Algoma Festival Grounds at Clark and Second.

This year’s hours are:

Friday 4-8 pm (free)

Saturday 10 am-6 pm ($10)

Sunday 11 am-3 pm (free)

All weekend, there’s a ton of fun to be had! Friday night’s event includes the exciting 8 pm drawing of the raffle prize winners. The featured prize, a new 2012 Cub Cadet riding mower is why it’s the “Mower for your Money” Raffle. But if you don’t get the mower, there’s also a laptop computer and generous Chamber Bucks, Shopping Sprees and Gift Certificates to win too.

A juried fine art exhibit will showcase the work of local and regional artists and artisans. Specialty foods will be offered expertly paired with von Stiehl’s award-winning Wisconsin wines. The Saturday Grape Stomp is always a hoot! There will be five heats of laughing, squishy good fun. For the live music, Mango Brothers, In Black ‘n’ White and Giv’n up the Ghost will get everyone dancing at the festival grounds on Friday and Saturday. The live music continues at the winery on Sunday with the Annie Rose Band.

There’s even more going on at the winery this year, in addition to tours and tastings all weekend. Special chocolate and wine pairings will be offered at the winery tasting bar. You can also sit in and enjoy delicious cheese and wine pairings out on the winery’s terrace.

A special “family pouring” will take place in the new production building on Saturday, 12:30 to 5 pm. For $10, guests can keep a lovely stemless Riedel glass and members of the Schmiling family will offer a tasting of fine von Stiehl wines. It’s a great opportunity to talk with the winemakers and get to know our Algoma, WI wines even better.

Lake Michigan fishing in Algoma, Wisconsin

June 26, 2012 by

If you’re not a local, you might not realize that Algoma Wisconsin fishing is a big deal for area fishermen-in-the-know.

In fact, two of Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan record fish have been caught in our very own Kewaunee County. In 1997, Debbie Morrison got a 27 lbs. 2 oz Steelhead. Dick Crowe got the record Lake Michigan brown trout (36 lbs. 9 oz.) in 2004. If you love to fish, your next fishing trip in Algoma, WI could land you the next record-breaker! Lake Michigan fishing from the waters of Algoma Wisconsin offers a wide range of fish to catch: Coho salmon, Chinook salmon, Steelhead trout, lake trout, brown trout and brook trout abound.

There are a lot of resources for Lake Michigan fishermen. For information on fishing licenses, weather conditions and much more, visit the DNR’s Lake Michigan Fishing page. The local fishing report is always a handy reference if you want to know where the fish are, what the weather’s doing, and what lures are making the fish bite. If you have your own boat for your Lake Michigan fishing trip, there are four marinas in Algoma: Algoma Boat Club, Algoma Marina, Captain K’s Landing and Pier 42 Marina.

Consider Algoma Charter Boat Fishing

If you don’t have your own boat or gas prices have made you rethink hauling your own, you can always opt for the experience and safety of a local charter boat. No one knows the local waters and the best Lake Michigan fishing spots better! There are a number of Algoma-area charter fishing companies. For a full list of charter boat services in Kewaunee County, check out the list at the Algoma Chamber of Commerce.

We also found this short but sweet reference for things to think about when hiring a charter fishing boat: http://www.takemefishing.org/assets/downloads/charter_fishing_tips.pdf

After you’re done with the day’s fishing, stop by our Algoma winery and unwind with some award-winning Wisconsin wines!
