Cherry Bounce Awarded Highest Honor

International Eastern Wine Competition

Cherry Bounce on Top with Highest Honor

We just received six medals at the International Eastern Wine Competition (IEWC) in Sonoma County, California. Established in 1975, the IEWC is one of the oldest and largest professional wine competitions in the nation.

The judging was held Feb. 10-11, 2015 in Sonoma County, California. Traditional awards were given in each division; any wines given a gold medal were then entered into a Taste off to see which wine was “Best of Class”.

Doc Stiehl’s Cherry Bounce, a sweet and smooth concoction of cherry wine and cherry brandy distilled from von Stiehl’s cherry wine, brought home a Double Gold and Best of Class. The high-alcohol Bounce is produced from Door County Cherries grown by Seaquist Orchards in Sister Bay. The cherry wine is then distilled into cherry brandy at Great Lakes Distillery in Milwaukee. Once back at von Stiehl the brandy is blended with more cherry wine and aged in red wine barrels for six months prior to release. Barrels help to smooth out the high alcohol, which comes in at 20.5%. Winemaker Aric Schmiling says, “Next to the 30 month aged Cherry Bounce, this is one of the finest cherry wines that our winery has ever produced.”

The IWEC poured out more medals for von Stiehl’s wine. A gold medal was also awarded to Symmetry, an off-dry white wine. Blueberry received a silver medal, and bronze medals were awarded to von Stiehl’s Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio.

Winter Wine in Wisconsin

Winter Wine in Wisconsin

Have you found yourself turning cold at all the of talk of blustery weather? We live in Wisconsin where weather won’t always be wonderful. If all that we do is wallow in weary alliteration, we’ll wear out those within earshot! Given that we do well with seasonal wines at von Stiehl, we thought, “Why not create a wine for the longest season of the year?” winter wine

Given our unhealthy dose of obsession with the cold, we thought it best to whip up a batch of warming Door County cherry winter wine seasoned with spices, cinnamon, and clove. Heat Winter Wine in a pot on the stove (or cup in the microwave) to a steamy level, but don’t let the alcohol boil away into the atmosphere. The air isn’t the one that should enjoy the alcohol.

While Winter Wine tastes great chilled, we suggest enjoying it warm. Whether the weather or listening to others whine gives you a chill, we hope that the warmth of our cherry Winter Wine keeps you in good spirits throughout the cold months! Now before you run off with new-found inspiration to play Scrabble with the W, find a way to get your hands on some of this new wine before it all disappears.

Find Winter Wine at your favorite Wisconsin retailer, here on our website, or call or visit the winery to purchase bottles direct.

Door County Spring Blossom Tour

March 16, 2013 by

Next month is when spring really begins in Door County. And how do we know this? Because the cherry blossoms appear – at last! All over the countryside and along the roadways, cherry blossoms leave their thin carpeting of white and pink petals. The trees become like giant cotton candy puffs and we remember what a warm breeze feels like on our faces.

A fun way to celebrate spring in Door County is via a trolley tour. The tours are run by Door County Trolley Inc. They pick you up in Sturgeon Bay around 9:30 a.m. and take you up the peninsula to the adorable community of Fish Creek, exploring orchards of blossoms and large expanses of wildflower fields along the way. There will be many great photo opportunities, so don’t forget your camera!

While in Fish Creek, you will enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride! Lunch and two wine tastings are also included in the tour.

The tours take place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout April and May. Cost is $60. Visit the Door County Trolley website to purchase tickets.

von Stiehl’s Cherry Wines

We have a wide selection of wines created from the very cherries these blossoms hail! After your tour, stop by von Stiehl in Algoma to taste some of our Door County cherry wines. Here are some of our most popular:

  • Cherry Blush Wine: A smooth and appealing semi-dry white blushed with Montmorency cherries.
  • Cherry Kirsche: This fortified wine is the perfect marriage of brandy spirits and cherry wine.
  • Cherry Kirsche Oak-Aged: This fortified wine is the perfect marriage of brandy spirits and cherry wine, aged in American Oak for an extra smooth finish.

You can buy any of our wines from our website if you can’t make it to our winery.

A Father’s Day Gift of Wisconsin Wine

June 17, 2011 by

Every family has their own way of celebrating Father’s Day. Father’s of young children are often treated to breakfast in bed and homemade cards. Father’s of teens might get a nod and a “Happy Father’s Day. Can I borrow the car?” Father’s of adult children may get a call and a gift in the mail. Some dads want nothing more than to spend Father’s Day with their children, no matter their age. This can mean of day of fishing on Lake Michigan, golfing, or watching a game on t.v. It may mean spending the day in the kitchen with the kids, preparing a great feast, or heading to the closest city for a day of exploration and eating out. You never can tell with Dads. No matter how you celebrate Father’s Day in your family, consider giving dad a bottle (or two) of von Stiehl Wisconsin Wine. If you live near Algoma or have plans to visit Door County over the weekend, stop by the winery for a bit of wine tasting. The tasting bar is bustling these days, which means the mood is festive. If you find a bottle you like and have a little time to spare, ask us for some “to go” wine glasses, purchase some local cheese and crackers in our store, and enjoy an impromptu picnic on our new terrace. Just be sure you remember to bring a bottle of our Algoma Wisconsin Wine with you when you leave.

We here at von Stiehl wish dads everywhere a Happy Father’s Day in 2011.
