Visit Door County

January 23, 2012 by

Wisconsinites who are crazy about ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing have been a bit blue this winter. While the mild temperatures and lack of snow have their benefits, they interfere with winter sports.

Door County, just north of our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery, is known as a winter wonderland. During typical winter weather, folks flock there to explore its miles of trails on skis, snowshoes, or snowmobiles. Don’t stay home just because Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated; there is plenty to do in Door County even without snow.

  • The 25th Annual Fish Creek Winter Festival takes place February 3-5, 2012. Ride the trolley, play human foosball, and check out the Door County Idol contest.
  • Candlelight Ski/Hike through Peninsula State Park on February 4, 2012. Warm yourself by the big old bonfire. 5:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Fire and Ice at Sturgeon Bay, February 17-19, 2012. Watch professionals carve ice, or try your own hand at it. Evenings are full of dancing.

Or forego the festivities and head to Door Peninsula with your sweetie for a romantic getaway. Cute cabins, quaint inns, and luxurious resorts invite lazy mornings and romantic evenings. Be sure to visit the tasting room at our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery on your way north. Find a wine you both like, and maybe some local cheese or sweet treat, to enjoy during your weekend in Door County. Valentine’s Day will soon be here; what are your plans?

Try a bottle of our 2008 Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon, made with grapes from Washington State’s Yakima Valley. A special wine for a special occasion.

Get Out on the Greens

October 18, 2011 by

There is nothing like Door County during the autumn. The air is crisp and the colors are magnificent. It’s nearly impossible to stay indoors during the daytime.

Many people head up to Door County at this time of year from parts further south. They pick apples and pears, visit pumpkin patches, and wander through lengthy corn mazes. They hike through wooded trails, bike down wooded lanes, and they golf.

There are more than a dozen golf courses on the Door Peninsula, where the golfing is bested only by the superlative views. The challenging greens of Alpine Golf Course in Egg Harbor afford stunning views of Egg Harbor and the surrounding bluffs. Deer Run Golf Course up on Washington Island is particularly colorful this time of year, surrounded as it is with mature maple trees. The golf course at Peninsula State Park is said to boast the most scenic greenways in the state. In addition to the large oak, maple and birch trees that line the greens (currently dressed in vivid red, orange, and yellow leaves), the course offers panoramic views of Green Bay, the coastline, and many villages on the peninsula.

We hope you’ll stop by our Algoma, Wisconsin Winery as you travel north to the Door Peninsula. Our tasting room is open daily. Take time to try a few of our Wisconsin wines, and when you find one you especially like (we think you’ll like them all), purchase a bottle or two to take with you. The only thing better than an autumn weekend in Door County is an autumn weekend in Door County accompanied by our Algoma, Wisconsin Wine.
