Vintage Tasting

Von Stiehl Offers a Vintage Wine Tasting on September 15

Click here to view a sneak peak on the wines offered.

We’d love for you to join us on September 15, from 12:30 to 3:30 pm in the bottling room of our production building at 104 Steele Street. You need not attend the wine festival in order to take part in this Vintage Wine Tasting, but as they say, “When in Rome…”

For our Vintage Wine Tasting, we find a few cases of favorite vintages stocked away for safe keeping. We then organize the wine varietals, decide which ones we will part with and add them to the vintage tasting list. This select list is only offered once a year at the Wet Whistle Wine Fest in September for our Vintage Wine Tasting.

Due to these wines being near and dear to us, just our family pulls corks and pours them for guests. We love to see the reactions on tasters’ faces as they first try our 2012 Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a bit of an abnormal tasting, set up on planks and barrels in our bottling room. Just the wine is fancy – the rest of it comes down to simple enjoyment of vintages that have enjoyed extra time relaxing within the winery walls.

We ask that you buy a Riedel stemless wine glass & five tasting tickets for $15. After that, we’ll pour samples from the special vintage tasting list. No reservations are needed, but keep in mind that we will run out of certain offerings as the day goes on. It’s both a sad, and a happy time!

Bottles are numbered so you’ll know if someone steals yours!

For more information on the fest, visit our Wet Whistle Wine Fest page by clicking here.

Concert Series

Join us as the Annie Rose Band ends our 2018 Summer Concert Series September 1st from 12:30-4:00 pm. Annie Rose is often referred to as “Green Bay’s best kept secret.”

The music is going to be great.  Add a cool Lake Michigan breeze, a beautiful riverside view, a glass of your favorite von Stiehl wine, or maybe even a beer from Ahnapee Brewery and then you have the recipe for the perfect lakeside summer afternoon.

New this year, we are re-releasing one of our vintage wines each Saturday. Sample a re-released vintage wine in our tasting room, for an additional $1 when tasting our Select Wine Tasting. Keep in mind that we may run out of certain offerings as the day goes on. It’s both a sad, and a happy time! Our vintage wine for this Saturday is our 2009 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.

We’ve also changed the layout this year, as we no longer have a tent on the front lawn for wine sales. Instead, we will be serving wine out our window and inside the winery, allowing for cash and card sales. We will also have a couple of hostesses each concert to provide table service for wine by the bottle. Beer will be available at the Taproom, but still can be enjoyed on the terrace.

The Skaliwagon Food Truck will not be with us this year. Instead, we recommend trying our Picnic Box for 2. The Picnic Box will include local Wisconsin cheeses, crackers, von Stiehl’s Hard Cider Sausage from Salmon’s Meats made with our Hard Cider, Door County munchies, Halo Vino glasses and other yummy snacks fit for two. This box can be found in our Tasting Room or ordered at the window.

Arrive before the concert starts to sample some of our gourmet wines in our Civil War era building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, or even take a tour including a visit to our underground limestone tunnels and our 10,000 square foot production facility.

Admission is free.

Vintage Tasting At Wet Whistle Wine Fest

August 18, 2018 by Rayanne Racine

von Stiehl Offers Vintage Tasting on September 15

Tucked away in various places of our production and tasting room buildings are small lots of old vintages. There will be two to ten cases of our favorite varieties spread out and tucked under pallet racking that look out of place. Early September, the odd lots are gathered, we come to terms with how many bottles of each to sell, and we then come up with a Vintage Tasting List. This list is offered only once a year at the Wet Whistle Wine Fest.

Most of the wines offered at this event have a limited supply, so tears will be shed. Below is a sneak peek at a few of the wines featured at this year’s Vintage Tasting.

2012 Sangiovese Grosso ~ This 100% Sangiovese was produced from the vcr6 clone that is used to produce Italy’s famous Brunello. It reveals aromas of black cherry and red fruits, with a subtle hint of sweet pipe tobacco and barrel spice. (10 cs) $34

2008 VS Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon ~ This vintage was created by meticulously tasting and selecting the best four barrels from a lot of seventeen. It is ready to drink now but will continue to improve with age for the next 10-15 years. (5cs) $65

2011 Doc Stiehl’s Extra Aged Cherry Bounce ~ This barrel has been left in warm summer and cold winter temperatures over the course of 30 months to expedite aging. A sweet and smooth concoction of cherry wine and cherry brandy. Intense aromas of fresh cherry pie for a truly exquisite dessert wine. (6 cs) $55

We’d love for you to join us on September 15, from 12:30pm to 3:30pm in the bottling room of our production building at 104 Steele Street. You don’t have to attend the wine festival in order to take part in this tasting, but you are more than welcome to!

*Bands may be subject to change. Sorry, no food or drink carry-ins allowed, but wine, beer, food, water & soda will be available for purchase.

BrewVino Steer Roast 5 Reasons

BrewVino Roast – a True Farm-to-Table Experience!

By now you have heard about our BrewVino Roast through our Facebook page, an episode featured on the Cooking Channel, or even word of mouth from an attendee that told you they got their tickets and you shouldn’t wait much longer. BrewVino is only a month away and with less than half of the tickets left for this year’s event, time is no longer on your side!

Maybe you’ve seen all the posts and the episodes on television, yet you need one more reason you should come to this year’s BrewVino Roast. Well, that’s exactly why we are going to give you “5 Reasons You Should Attend our 2018 BrewVino!” If you’ve already bought your tickets, then think of this list as the “5 Reasons You Should Be Excited to Attend our 2018 BrewVino!”

  1. Wine! After all, what’s an event at a winery without wine? Not only do we have our typical wine selection, but we’ll also have a vintage wine tasting offered in our century year old tunnels. Some of the wines you’ll find waiting for you include our 2014 Alexander Valley Merlot, 2009 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 BrewVino Red (which we will talk about more in just a little bit) and our 2013 Extended Barrel Aged Kirsche. These wines and others on this list aren’t available for purchase just any normal day. After BrewVino, the wine left over will be hidden away until our winemakers decide when to bring them back out.
  2. Jumping off of our first point, our 2018 BrewVino Roast Red has taken a step up from past years. You can tell by the smile on our winemakers’ faces that they are proud of this year’s vintage. If you are a fan of our Calistoga Cabernet, this wine is right up your alley! It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot. To match the exquisite wine inside the bottle, the label is a decadent maple veneer label with a black foil stamp.
  3. Everyone loves a little feel good aspect. This year we’ve decided to come together with the Wolf Den organization at the Algoma High School. Wolf Den is an after school program aimed at improving the physical, social and emotional well-being of Algoma’s youth. Wolves (high school students) plan and lead various activities which build Pups’ (elementary students) resilience, positive mindset, and basic life skills. There is an optional meal at the end of the program each day to ensure their basic needs are met before going home. Food insecurity and poverty effect many of our Algoma youth.  This program, along with the Wolves & Pups Mentorship Program, ensures that the Pups feel safe, valued and supported.
  4. A true Farm-to-Table experience, that’s exactly what you’ll get! This steer was raised on Ahnapee Brewery spent grains on the Bryersquart Family Farm in Forestville. This is not an amateur production either — for starters, the steer is processed by Otto’s Meats in Luxemburg. After, von Stiehl’s winemaker, Aric Schmiling, will prepare the special cherry wine marinade. Then, the full carcass is marinated for 24 hours before it’s laid over a hot fire at 2 am on the day of the event, with a serving time somewhere between noon and 2 pm, or when our experts deem it ready.
  5. Tickets are selling fast and you’ll regret not getting your tickets fast enough after listening to your friends talking about how much fun they had! Now that the event is drawing closer, the phone calls are coming in, ticket sales are booming and attendees keep calling back to get more tickets for their groups. This year we are capping our attendance to 750 lucky individuals. If you are thinking about how fun this event is, there hasn’t been a better time to get your tickets than now, in order to secure your spot at this event.

Vintage Tasting at Wet Whistle Wine Fest

August 16, 2016 by Brad Schmiling

Vintage Tasting

Von Stiehl Offers Vintage Tasting on September 17

Tucked away in various places of our production building and tasting room buildings are small lots of old vintages. You will only notice them on tour if you look closely to find pallets of mismatched wine boxes. There will be two to ten cases of our favorite varieties spread out, and tucked under pallet racking that look out of place. We like to hide these vintages in plain sight. When the beginning of September rolls around, we go on a wine hunt. The odd lots are gathered, then signs are made. Pricing is negotiated. Tears are shed. You get the idea.

When we come to terms with how many bottles of each vintage to sell, we then come up with a Vintage Tasting List. This list is offered once a year at the Wet Whistle Wine Fest in September. These wines are near and dear to us, so just our family pulls corks and pours them for guests. We love to see the reactions on tasters’ faces as they first try our 2006 Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon. Another highlight is to pull and offer barrel samples of a special batch of Cherry Bounce. It’s a bit of an abnormal tasting, set up on planks and barrels in our bottling room. Just the wine is fancy – the rest of it comes down to simple enjoyment of vintages that have enjoyed extra time relaxing within the winery walls.

We’d love for you to join us on September 17, from 12:30 to 4 pm in the bottling room of our production building at 104 Steele Street. You need not attend the wine festival in order to take part in this tasting, but as they say, “When in Rome…”

We ask that you buy a Riedel stemless wine glass for $10. After that, we’ll pour five samples from the special vintage tasting list. No reservations are needed, but keep in mind that we will run out of certain offerings as the day goes on. It’s both a sad, and a happy time!
