The weather is ripe for a weekend of wine tasting, and Wisconsin's oldest winery, in Algoma, is close to Green Bay and Manitowoc. Cancel all your other plans on Saturday and head out for a scenic drive – destination, Von Stiehl Winery. Wine tasting is available all year, and it is always complimentary so that you can be sure you'll find a wine to your taste.
November through April, tours of the winery are offered on Saturdays at 2pm. The tour is a lovely addition to a wine tasting outing, particulary for folks who appreciate 19th century Austrian-American architcture. Built just a few years after the Civil War, the winery is listed on the Federal Historic Registery. Underground, gracefully arched limestone caverns were first built for the Ahnapee Brewing company. Now the old limestone halls are lined with gleaming, stainless steel vats filled with wine.
