Wine Down This August

August 7, 2019 by Molly Schroeder

Just because the kids are headed back to school, doesn’t mean that summer is over. That’s why we are featuring one of our favorite summertime fruit wines, Blueberry. This delightful semi-sweet wine is filled with New York blueberries that dance across your pallet. It has a smooth blueberry finish. Your mind will be tricked into thinking you just had a handful of blueberries. Enjoy a complimentary tasting of our Blueberry wine during August. It’s best served chilled with cheesecake or pizza. One of our customers even suggests skipping the mimosa and instead of enjoying a glass of Blueberry wine
with your pancakes.
If your palate enjoys dry reds over sweets, we have a new wine just for you. Our 2016 Petite Sirah, is ready for you to take home. This vibrant, full-bodied red wine was aged for twenty-eight months in an American Oak barrel before it was ready to be bottled. Try pairing it with bacon, blue cheese or a filet mignon.
Enjoy a glass or a bottle of either the Blueberry or the 2016 Petite Sirah, during our Summer Concert Series happening Thursday and Saturday afternoons throughout August. We look forward to seeing you soon!
~Cheers!

Steel Bridge Songfest

Celebrating their ninth year, Steel Bridge Songfest takes place in Sturgeon Bay to celebrate historic preservation through music. Over 150 artists perform all original music at more than a dozen venues throughout the city. Steel Bridge Songfest 2013 takes place June 13 -16. Come and enjoy four days of music for the unbelievably affordable ticket price of $25!

Story of the Steele Bridge Songfest

According to the Steel Bridge website, in 1996, a grassroots group called “the SOBs” (Save Our Bridge) was organized to save Sturgeon Bay’s Michigan Street Bridge from the scheduled wrecking ball. They amazingly succeeded and in 2005, Citizens for Our Bridge (CFOB) was registered as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Their mission: preserve and promote this historic bridge through community outreach and education via creative musical events and projects.

To build public appreciation for the bridge and the Historic Downtown District in Sturgeon Bay, a week-long celebration is held every June in and around The Holiday Music Motel, a fully operational motel that also hosts live music events. Songwriters and musicians from around the world, including Jackson Browne, Jane Wiedlin (Go-Go’s), James McMurtry and hundreds of others have performed at this event, donating their time and talents to perform at Steel Bridge Songfest.

Since 2007, thanks to assistance from the National Trust For Historic Preservation and the funds raised through Songfest, Sturgeon Bay’s Historic “Steel Bridge” is protected, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge turned 80 the summer of 2011 and also underwent a long awaited rehab. Since the bridge is officially “saved,” CFOB’s continued mission is to honor the bridge as a living symbol of creative collaboration and preservation thriving together harmoniously, building community, drawing greater beauty and vitality to our surroundings.

Our winery is over 150 years old. It was originally a brewery, however, in the mid 1960s, Dr. Charles Stiehl purchased and restored the building to expand his hobby, making wine out of Door County cherries. Intrigued? Stop by our winery in Algoma any day of the week and join in a tour – we have about seven per day during the summer. Look forward to seeing you!

von Stiehl’s wines were among 140 wines from 25 Wisconsin wineries evaluated at the June 21st competition. The experienced panel of judges was impressed by the overall quality of the competition submissions. “This is an exciting competition to judge as there is such a variety of grapes grown and the winemakers are making delicious, well crafted wines.” said Dr. Valery Uhl, Lead Judge. Judging with Jessica Bell and Dr. Murli Dharmadhikari, the panel members have several years of experience evaluating wines throughout the U.S. and internationally. They’re also very knowledgeable about Midwestern grape varieties and wines.

Said Dr. Murli Dharmadhikari:

The Wisconsin State Fair Professional Wine Competition is impressive. I found the wine quality superior and feel Wisconsin wineries are doing an excellent job implementing recently introduced cold climate grape varieties into their wines. Wisconsin grown fruit wines were equally impressive. I believe the future of the Wisconsin grape and wine industry looks very promising.

von Stiehl winery is thrilled to be part of this exciting time in the growth of the Wisconsin wine industry. We’ve been working hard to create the best wines and a welcoming atmosphere for wine lovers to enjoy the fruits of our labor. It’s always great when we hear the comments of the people who come to our wine tastings and events. It’s also extremely gratifying to have qualified wine experts award this hard work with gold and silver medals.

We invite you to come to the winery to try out our recent award winners and all the hand crafted wines of our winery in Algoma!
