The von Stiehl Steer Roast Is Back For June 2023!

That’s right! Back by popular demand, the winery will be hosting its first Steer Roast since 2019! All the questions, crossed fingers, and frantic pleading have been answered!

“Sorry, New Steer Roast, Who Dis?”

A lot has changed within the last three years!  We began by practicing less wine tastings and more social distancing, to saying ‘goodbye’ to a brewery and ‘hello’ to a cider bar. But change is a good thing! And the last few years have only allowed for us to get those creative grape juices flowing! The event formerly known as “BrewVino”, is now our “von Stiehl Steer Roast.”  If you are starting to feel your palms get clammy and your eyebrows furrow over what this “new” event could entail, don’t worry! Our Steer Roast event encapsulates the very same delicious food, wine, and excellent service that you have experienced in years past and more!  So, what has changed? Although our steer has not had the luxury of being raised on spent grains from Ahnapee Brewery, it will have the privilege of being served by a great team of roasters, including Russ Nockerts, owner and head pitmaster of Steel Belly BBQ.

“Hmm. Intriguing, Tell Me More…”

For those of you who have never attended our BrewVino Roast in the past, or those who have been waiting for so long that you forgot what a steer roast even is, we will explain just what you can expect from our von Stiehl Steer Roast.

The unique steer that we acquire has been raised at the Bryersquart Family Farm, one of the top farms in polled genetic cattle in Door County. Prior to the roast, the steer is bathed in a wine marinade. And not just anybody is preparing this feast. Von Stiehl Winemaker, Aric Schmiling, prepares the special wine marinade. Then, the full carcass is marinated for 24 hours prior to the steer roast. The roast begins with a hot fire at 3am on the day of the event, with the steer coming off the pit between noon and 1pm. But if you find yourself with an early appetite from all the savory aromas and tender visuals, your needs have been anticipated! A number of steer roasts have been prepared and cooked hours earlier and will begin to be served at 11am.

If you need even more of a reason to delight in an afternoon of great food and award-winning wines, know that, by partaking in this event, you are also contributing to your community. A portion of this year’s event’s proceeds will be going to the Wolf Den non-profit organization at the Algoma High School. Wolf Den is an after school program aimed at improving the physical, social, and emotional well-being of Algoma’s youth. Wolves (high school students) plan and lead various activities, which build Pups’ (elementary students) resilience, positive mindset, and basic life skills. This program, along with the Wolves & Pups Mentorship Program, ensures that the Pups feel safe, valued and supported.

“Hurry, Take My Money!”

As the long-awaited return of the Steer Roast is finally here, we are excited to roll out the red carpet and welcome back this event with arms wide open!  Help us to not only celebrate with friends new and old, but to give a cheers to change, growth, and renewal! This year we will be capping our attendance to 600 individuals, so be sure to not only get a ticket for yourself, but secure the spots for the rest of your group as well!

Join us on June 3rd, 2023 from 11am – 4pm and have the chance to taste the most popular varieties of von Stiehl wines and experience the opportunity to buy an exclusive batch of wine produced just for the event!
